New consumer board machine starting in 2016
Stora Enso has consumer board mills in the Nordic countries and now also in China. The new Beihai mill with a state-of-the-art board machine is located in the region of Guangxi, and we have a plan to build also a chemical pulp mill at the same location at a later stage.
Benefitting the local community
Stora Enso’s operations in Guangxi include also tree plantations. The plantations under Stora Enso’s management cover a total of 90,000 hectares of land, which is equivalent to an area slightly larger than the region of Hong Kong.
Sustainability is a prerequisite for the success of our investments in China. Engagement with local stakeholders is a key element of our everyday field operations in China. Our field staff and social engagement officers speak regularly with members of communities in the vicinity of our plantations and mill site, to inform them about Stora Enso’s operations and to enable them to express their concerns and contribute ideas. We strive to ensure that our work promotes gender inclusivity, and that less vocal villagers are also consulted.
The total investment in Beihai will be the largest ever in the history of Stora Enso. Stora Enso will have some 3,000 employees in Guangxi. The investment will have a highly positive effect on the local economy as each employee translates to roughly ten times as many indirect jobs. Local landowners will also benefit from the investment.
